Weather & Mountain Conditions, September to October 2009 KwaZulu-Natal and the Drakensberg: September is when spring arrives in the Drakensberg and surrounding areas. The dry winter months gradually give way to wetter weather as summer approaches. However, October can also still be quiet dry. During the above mentioned months cold fronts move up from the Cape bringing fairly cold conditions and a few days of rain. There is still good hiking and climbing during this time. This is a good time of year for hiking in the Drakensberg. However snow falls can still be expected till the end of September. There can also be high winds during this time. Rest of southern Africa: Cape Town and Cederberg area fall in the winter rainfall area of South Africa and are therefore going into the dry, hot summer of this region. This is good time for rock-climbing and hiking. The Magaliesberg
area near to Johannesburg and the sport climbing areas near Harrismith
